MQA is Committed to Making Malaysia a Global Education Hub

The Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) and local universities with self-accreditation status are committed to making the country a global

education hub through the offering of micro-credentials programmes.

MQA Chief Executive Officer Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said, among local higher education institutions (HEIs), the micro-credentials

programme is hotly talked about and universities with self-accreditation status need to be pioneers or trendsetters in their offerings.

"Don't think that when other HEIs don't offer a programme, why do we need to do it? The question is, why do we need to wait for others to do it before

we want to do it? If we continue to think like that, he said, we will only be able to be followers and not leaders, therefore we need to be pioneer.

"When the world doesn't do it, we do it... the global community will come to us and help make the Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini

Ahmad's wish to attract 250,000 international students to Malaysia by the year 2025 able to make Malaysia a global education hub, " he said

during the MQA Tour Session @ IPT Self-Accreditation at the International Medical University (IMU).

Also present, IMU Vice Chancellor Prof Abdul Aziz Baba, MQA Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Quality Assurance) Prof. Ir. Dr. Khairul Salleh Mohamed

Sahari, MQA Senior Director (Policy and Expertise Development), Mr. Mohammad Dzafir Mustafa, MQA Senior Director (Accreditation), Mr. Mohd Khairul

Nizam Ibrahim and MQA Institutional Audit Division Director, Mrs. Mazlinawati Mohamed.

With the status of self-accreditation, HEIs can offer programmes that are deemed appropriate and in high demand after going through the accreditation

process and being approved by the university senate.

Commenting further, Mohammad Shatar said that offering micro-credentials courses is either a small break from programmes that have been accredited

or on a stand-alone basis as one of the income generation initiatives for IPT. At the global level, he said, Malaysia became the second highest country

for searches regarding micro-credentials after Australia on Google Trends.

"This proves that higher education in this country has reached a good standard at the global level when it is one of the most important references

related to micro-credentials.

"This advantage needs to be utilized by local HEIs to offer higher education that is more flexible not only for the student market in this country,

but also for the international community," he said.
