NIOSH Offers Basic Course on Occupational Health and Safety in Tourism Sector

The Human Resources Ministry (KESUMA) through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will offer free basic occupational safety and health courses to 10,000 individuals in the tourism sector with an allocation of RM2.65 million, said its minister, Datuk Seri R. Ramanan.

Known as the Safety Induction Training for the Tourism Industry (SITI), he said the programme was specifically designed to ensure that tourism sector workers have the knowledge to prevent incidents, control risks in the workplace, and comply with the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022.

"Those referred to include tour guides, tour operators, workers or contractors, staff and accommodation providers. These groups will be offered to participate in the SITI programme to carry out their jobs in accordance with occupational safety and health (OSH) standards. This is also in line with the initiative to support the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 Campaign," he said.

Online applications to participate in the training will be open from 25 January at www.niosh.com.my.

According to Ramanan, the duration of the SITI program is only seven hours and is conducted either online or face-to-face at NIOSH facilities nationwide.

"Participants who successfully complete the course will be given a digital safety passport that is valid for two years and, just like safety passports for other industries issued by NIOSH, SITI passport holders will also receive insurance coverage both domestically and internationally," he said.

Meanwhile, NIOSH Executive Director Datuk Ayop Salleh said the SITI programme focuses on five main components, including incident prevention, OSH laws and regulations, safety measures in tourism and risk control.

"The tourism sector has its own risks that need to be addressed through systematic training covering various aspects such as transportation, accommodation and food preparation," he said.
