The government is advised to ensure that the production of local goods is able to meet the demand of consumers in the country.
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) School of Business and Economics lecturer Prof. Dr. Noor Azman Ali said that the matter needs to
be done in order to succeed in the campaign to buy local goods that can overcome the country's inflation problem.
"For me, the government should not only encourage consumers to use local goods, but the government also need to ensure that
the production of local goods is able to meet demand. "Simply put, basic items like rice, is locally produced rice able to meet
demand? Not enough. Because it's about 60 percent only. It should be 100 percent local production".
'If you want consumers to use local rice, then they need to increase productivity by another 40 percent, then the campaign to use
local products will be successful," he said.
He said this when interviewed in the Wacana Sinar Harian programme entitled 'Can Malaysia Overcome Inflation?' which was held on
17 May 2022. Apart from the issue of local rice production, Noor Azman said coconut crops should also be no problems in the country.
"Our country should have no problem growing coconuts. However, we import coconuts. Only until we can ensure that there are enough
local coconuts, then we can urge, request and ensure that our consumers use local products," he said.
However, according to Noor Azman, consumer policies through the campaign of using local goods is indeed recognized as one of
the three general measures in curbing inflation, as well as financial policies and fiscal policies. "With overnight policy rates (OPR),
so consumers have two options, whether they spend or invest. The increase in OPR can reduce and control consumer spending," he added.
