MQA Suggests Higher Education Institutions to Produce More Practical Professors

The quality of the country's higher education will continue to improve by producing more professors of practice.

Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said that the quality of Malaysian higher education cannot be denied on the international stage and its performance can be seen through various aspects such as the marketability of graduates and the position of local higher education institutions (HEIs) in the universities world ranking.

However, he said, we cannot be quick to be satisfied because there is always room for improvement to further improve the image and quality level of higher education.

"One of the ways is to produce more practical professors where a professor does not only master the theory but more importantly is able to translate it into reality in the form of practice.

"For example, mechanical engineering professors not only know how a machine works, but are able to repair it if it breaks down," he said.

Practical professor is an award given to an individual with extensive experience with specific expertise in a certain field who carries the title of 'professor' at the IPT that awards it.

The recipient is usually someone who makes a great contribution to society.

Mohammad Shatar said, the matter is not new, if seen in developed countries, professors are often consulted when the community faces a problem and not just to give theory but to share the solution.

He said, he is confident in that way, the quality of Malaysian higher education will imrove even further, especially when it becomes a culture among professors.

Local HEIs are encouraged to produce more practical professors to help develop the programmes offered so that they are more relevant and meet the needs of the industry.

"This initiative is in line with the wishes of the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir who wants to make Malaysia a global education hub," he said.
