Teaching and Learning at Universities: The Main Pillar of Madani Society

The concept of Malaysia Madani should be applied by lecturers at local higher education institutions (HEIs) in teaching and learning (T&L) sessions to produce higher quality graduates.

Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Dato' Prof. Dr. Mohammad Shatar Sabran said that among the agendas of Malaysia Madani is focusing on solving problems, meeting the country's current needs and touching on shaping the future.

He said that MQA is confident that the agenda can be realised through education, therefore it is hoped that higher education institutions need to review their teaching and learning methods, not just to complete the syllabus, but at the same time need to include the civic concept introduced by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"The method by which lecturers can instill the 'spirit of education' in students is by applying the Physical, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual, Social (JERIS) elements."

"If JERIS can be implemented, we are confident that IPT will be able to produce high-quality students and graduates, thereby helping to realise the Madani concept agenda as desired," he said.

The concept of a Malaysia Madani has been hotly debated since it was introduced by the Prime Minister recently. The concept highlights policy pillars based on six pillars, namely sustainability, well-being, creativity, respect and kindness.

The Prime Minister was also reported to have said that he wanted the younger generation to rise as a new force for the concept of Malaysia Madani by rejecting stagnant and old-fashioned beliefs that only harm the nation.

To enable such things to be achieved, Mohammad Shatar said, lecturers or teaching staff need to have the 'High Touch' element, meaning they are trained and equipped with a more sophisticated touch.

He said that this matter was an important element emphasized in the 2023 New Year's Message by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

"We want the generation of students who are born to be able to boost Malaysia's image as a country with integrity and cleanliness as desired by the country's leadership."

"MQA will continue to be committed to maintaining the quality of higher education so that all planned agendas can be achieved," he said.
