UTeM Makes History, First IPT to Offer TVET-Based Doctor of Professional Practice Program Approved by MQA.


		Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) here made history when it became the first higher education institution (IPT) in the country to receive approval from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) to offer a Doctor of Professional Practice (DPP) programme based on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The approval is described as an important achievement in efforts to strengthen the country's higher education ecosystem, thus opening up wider pathways for technologists and industry professionals to pursue doctoral studies based on real industry practice. Unlike conventional Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs which focus more on theoretical research, DPP focuses on solving industry issues through a work-based learning approach (Professional Practice-Based Learning or PPBL). Through this approach, students will conduct research directly in their respective workplaces to produce high-impact process improvements and more effective practical solutions, thus providing direct benefits to the industry through the application of knowledge, technology and innovation in real work environments. UTeM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Datuk Ts Dr Massila Kamalrudin said that the programme was carefully developed with the involvement of strategic industry partners to ensure that the curriculum is relevant, practical and meets the current needs of the job market.
		"The implementation of this program also takes into account the country's needs in producing highly skilled workforce with a TVET background, especially in new technology fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), renewable energy, smart energy systems, industrial digitalization, automation, and sustainable technology." "This programme is also seen as an important continuation of the TVET education pathway up to the doctoral level, thus strengthening the development of the country's human capital in high-impact technical and technological fields," he said in a statement.		Education analysts see the introduction of DPP as a strategic move that can change society's perception of TVET, which was previously often considered limited to low- and medium-level skills education. The existence of this TVET-based doctoral pathway is believed to be able to increase the attractiveness of professionals to continue improving their academic qualifications without having to leave their respective employment sectors.
